Past Applications : Rodolphus Name: Rodolphus Lestrange Birthdate: February 20, 1959 Age: 17 Year/house: Seventh/Slytherin Affiliation: Rodolphus isn't a marked Death Eater yet although he is extremely interested in the rumors and things he's heard about the man who calls himself Voldemort. While he's already fathered into an organization known as the Knights of Walpurgis due to his bloodline and lineage, he views the Knights as nothing more than a group of old wind-bags sitting around and bitching like women while Voldemort and his followers actually seem to have the courage to act. Blood: Pureblood with family lines maybe a bit too close for comfort (at least by society's perspective) Pet: Rodolphus and animals have a tumultuous history together and while he's had many different pets growing up all of his relationships with them have been short lived and whose endings are clouded in mysterious and bizarre deaths. Wand: 12 inches, hazel, dragon heartstring Sexual Orientation: Rodolphus uses sex the way many men suspect women do, as a weapon and as a tool in order to get what he wants. While Rodolphus isn't biased against any particular gender and is a pretty big flirt, he'll fuck as a last resort to get what he wants. Marital Status: Single Appearance: Rodolphus brags that he has one of the best faces in the wizarding world and has absolutely no problem being called or referred to as a pretty boy. When he needs to look good, he can look very, very good and when he needs to look bad he has no problem being frightening. He has a clean, expressive face with a strong jaw line and a well defined mouth good for lip biting, pouting, kissing, smirking, and even scowling. His eyes are pale and green and in comparison to the rest of his dark and brooding features the lightness of them can be a little disconcerting. If asked, however, the eldest Lestrange son will insist his gaze is "arresting and passionate" and just as likely to attract as it is to repulse and inspire a cowering cringe should be put the necessary emotion behind it. His hair is a dark brown and he wears it a little on the long side in that casual and unkempt style that seems to be so popular among boys his age. It's a look he has to work at to maintain, however. While he could probably be one of those boys that wakes up and goes out without spending any time fussing in front of a mirror, vanity just simply won't allow it. Rodolphus needs at least an hour to get ready in the morning.
Since most of his favorite past times and hobbies involve being outside, Rodolphus' skin tone tends to be dark and tanned. Not being a fan of modesty or tan lines, he takes care to make sure he cooks evenly on all sides. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as his body type certainly isn't unappealing to bear witness to. He has an athletic build with the majority of his strength residing in his arms and hands courtesy of five years playing Beater for the Slytherin Quidditch team. Rodolphus carefully maintains his body weight and appearance as a man who strives for his own personal best at all times.
His favorite body part out of all of them would have to be his hands. They aren't the soft, supple hands of the affluent, but firm with thick fingers that make a solid fist when he curls them up. He pays a particular amount of time to his fingernails keeping cuticles pushed back and trimmed and the nails themselves buffed, white, and clean. The skin on his palms and the backs of his hands are speckled with scars from bite marks and scratches with a callous on the inside of the middle finger on his right hand from writing.
Rodolphus has maybe a little too much fun when it comes to style and fashion. He refuses to wear anything but the finest tailored garments his family can afford and enjoys dressing up to the nines even for the most simple and mundane tasks. He favors oxfords, shiny shoes, suspenders, ties, cufflinks, and the color white. The only time Rodolphus can ever stand to dress down is when he's tanning, playing sports, or otherwise engaging in messy or dirty activities. He's been told before that he dresses like a ponce although he doesn't take too much offense to it since his main goal is to look expensive, more wealthy than his family actually is, and to stand out in a crowd. He's fairly confident in his ability to live up to all of these expectations no matter the reactions he receives. Personality: Being the eldest son to a Pureblood family is a condition that some teenagers may find daunting, a responsibility that would be wonderful to collect the rewards for but troublesome when it comes to maintaining. For Rodolphus, however, it is a wonderful opportunity to propel not only his family but also himself into infamy. He is extremely conscious of his actions and how they will reflect back on the Lestranges as a whole He has very lofty goals for his family name which is a known one just not for the reasons and to the lengths that he'd like. Nothing is as important to him as achieving those goals. He doesn't care if the Lestranges are known for their corruption, decadence, nefarious and evil personalities, or heinous gruesome deeds as long as everyone in the wizarding world knows who they are and respects their name whether it be for appreciation or fear. While he knows the Lestrange family will never reach the lofty heights of the Blacks, he holds that particular family line above all others and as a model he's willing to strive to and work for.
Beyond the larger picture of what he wants for his family, Rodolphus also has a few things that make him infinitely happy that he likes to spend his time on. He enjoys Quidditch because not only does it keep him fit and in shape but whacking Bludgers around all day long also helps to alleviate stress as well as intimidate possible targets with a few meaningful glances and full bodied practice swings.
Rodolphus is also perpetually intrigued by the human condition. People and how they work, how they will react, their quirks and individualities easily captivate his interest. While he is a man who admires perfection in himself he is also a man who is enraptured by the flaws of others whether they are physical or emotional. This interest isn't at all limited strictly to Pureblood wizards. In Rodolphus' opinion, the world is filled with Muggles and Halfbloods and Muggleborns and since he has absolutely nothing to fear from such a sub par creature he might as well mingle with them. He is an extremely social individual and has absolutely no problem with smiling and talking up with anyone that crosses his path. He's pretty skilled at coming off as friendly, too, especially compared to some of his stuck up, snobby, Pureblood counterparts.
Along with his sports and social skills, Rodolphus spends time deepening his understanding and ability in the subject of Transfiguration. In order to be able to understand the rearranging of one thing into another, Rodolphus spends a lot of time studying biology, physiology, and anatomy. He enjoys seeing how living things work and taking them apart in order to do so. Cataloguing the things he's learned and the experiments and dissections he's conducted is something he's been doing for a very long time and enjoys updating and reviewing at every available opportunity.
While he likes to put up a genial, easy going front, Rodolphus is secretly a bully underneath. If he can't get what he want by being nice, he'll attempt to get what he's after through physical force. He'll never admit to this, however, even if he's caught red handed with his victim's blood on his shirt. If caught he'll smile and insist he would never ever do anyone a speck of harm. He has a volatile personality and can be sent into a violent rage by seemingly little or no provocation. It's an extremely difficult task to pinpoint what will set Rodolphus off although he is easily frustrated when he can't manage to get things to go his way and when people embarrass him. Once a person manages to get on Rodolphus' bad side, it's difficult to cross back over. He never forgets an insult or slight and holds grudges for ridiculous amounts of time. While it's rare for him to start a fight in public now that he's older, Rodolphus will never back down in a confrontation, will seldom compromise and never gives into peer pressure or threats.
Strengths: Rodolphus is a man very dedicated to his goals and ideals. He will work hard and ceaselessly to achieve what he wants and isn't afraid to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve his desires. This makes him a very loyal individual when it comes to things like Pureblood ethics and later Voldemort and his marriage to Bellatrix Black. Under the tutelage of his father, Rodolphus has already learned several skills to both meet his desired ends and to give himself a bit of an edge. Under the tutelage of his father beginning with his first year at Hogwarts, Rodolphus has been instructed and trained in the use of the Unforgivables. Given his knowledge of physiology and anatomy, along with his penchant for Transfiguration (his best subject in school), Rodolphus considers himself proficient with the Cruciatus Curse, his favorite of the three.
Rodolphus is also rather silver-tongued when it comes to dealing with other people. He fancies himself a sweet talker when it comes to the ladies and charismatic with the men. Whether this belief is a delusion or not has nothing to do with the fact that Rodolphus does at least know how to act. He is very polite and mindful of himself and his manners now that he's seventeen. A lot of the older Pureblood family members seem to enjoy this trait in particular as not many children his age know how to properly act and address their elders.
A third strength would be Rodolphus' willingness and ability to do the dirty work. While he wants the best for his family, he doesn't mind working hard to achieve this. He doesn't mind getting his hands bloody and taking on the tasks that some of his peers may be a little shy or squeamish about. He'll suck up, placate, hurt, maim, and probably even murder for the right person if asked. Flaws: Rodolphus biggest flaw is probably his almost complete inability to think before he acts. As opposed to the quiet, thoughtful, devious kind of villain he is the shoot first and ask questions later type of person. This lack of tact and caution could prove to be very detrimental to him given the right circumstances. Hand in hand with his thoughtlessness, Rodolphus is very easily swayed to follow orders, especially if they're given to him by people he views as figures of authority, people he respects, or people he wants to like him. Another flaw would be Rodolphus' afore mentioned temper. He is an easy man to provoke if one knows how to do it. This, combined with his fanatical devotion to his family name, makes Rodolphus an easy man to manipulate and control by the right sort of person.
Rodolphus is the kind of individual who is used to having everything go his way and when things around him deviate from that trend, or when they start going poorly, Rodolphus crashes hard from the dose of reality. When he throws a temper tantrum they can often last for days and in them is he moody and gloomy and obnoxiously victimized and he will take his bad mood out on absolutely anyone that gets close enough. These bouts of annoyed depression last for days in which he is completely useless without the proper distraction.
Thirdly, his family's penchant for mental illness is a disease that hasn't seemed to skip Rodolphus. While he isn't outwardly running around eating crayons and smearing feces on the wall while singing Henry the Eighth, it's apparent that those types of behaviors may very well be his future. This is possibly his biggest secret and he guards it religiously especially from the other Pureblood families as it would certainly impede his chances with marriage dealings. He keeps his more psychotic thoughts to himself and has perfected a mask of relative normalcy to wear for the public.
History: Growing up, it didn't take Rodolphus long to realize that being noticed was definitely better than being ignored. It also came to his attention that bad behavior stood out more than good And so, as a child, Rodolphus was a handful of energy, difficult to control, and prone to all sorts of bizarre and often times shocking and disgusting behavior in order to garner the lime light. He spent a lot of his time outdoors fighting with the other neighborhood boys and harassing the neighborhood girls. He would crawl around in the back yard capturing insects, tearing the wings off of butterflies with his teeth, eating spiders, throwing rocks and chasing people around with dead animals (that he often gruesomely killed in front of others himself just to shock them).
When he was forced to stay indoors or to go with his parents to dinner parties or gatherings among their peers he was even more squirmy than usual. In his young age he hated having to get dressed up, being poised and polite and in good behavior and more often than not when the Lestrange family returned home after an outing they left apologizing. The other pureblood children he met growing up were not safe from his outlandish behavior either and probably many of the students his age still remember Rodolphus Lestrange coming to their house with a dead mouse in his pocket and the idea that they should all sneak off while the adults were talking and explore those secret places of everyone's house where children aren't supposed to go. In his childhood, Rodolphus was nice enough to the other witches and wizards he met but certainly an obnoxious presence and formed no real serious relationships with any of his peers, a trend that would follow him into adolescence.
The addition of Rabastan to the equation of his family was met with mixed emotions by the now older brother Rodolphus. The pregnancy had been a difficult one for Mrs. Lestrange and under the orders of a doctor, she was sent to the country for the term of her pregnancy (they hired a nanny to take care of Rodolphus during this time since Mr. Lestrange would need the help) and when she returned it was with a newborn in tow. Because he'd never really seen his mother visibly pregnant and when she came back it was with child, for quite a few years Rodolphus wasn't quite sure he believed Rabastan was really his brother. In a quest to both promote brotherly bonding and to maybe give Rodolphus a distraction from being so troublesome, often times he was given the tasking of looking after Rabastan. The older they both got the more and more responsibility Rodolphus was assigned and the closer he and his brother became.
When Rodolphus received his letter to Hogwarts in February of 1970 it was of no surprise to anyone in the Lestrange family. Their eldest son had already proved his magical ability that one horrible day he'd somehow gotten a hold of his father's wand. They were even less surprised when he was sorted into Slytherin, a house nearly all of his Hogwarts going ancestors had been placed in.
While attending to magic school had been something Rodolphus had looked forward to for a long time, actually going there proved to be far different than the way he'd always planned it. Instead of being a popular guy, well known for his family and the deeds of his youth, the bustling hallways had stripped away all of his hard earned reputation. Here, he was just another wormy little first year. Even if he'd earned the fear and respect of everyone on his block by biting the head off of a chipmunk and squirting shocked onlookers with the animal's blood, going tĂȘte a tĂȘte with a sixth year was going to send him to the hospital wing. And so, his first few years at Hogwarts severely cowed Rodolphus' temperament as he struggled to get used to his new lifestyle and make a name for himself.
This seemed to change for him once he was accepted onto the Slytherin Quidditch team in his second year as a Beater. While his predecessor quit under mysterious circumstances, Rodolphus proved to be a more than capable if not a little violent replacement. his brother's presence as another student of Hogwarts school also helped to boost his confidence among his peers and very soon he was up to his old tricks again. By his third year, Rodolphus Lestrange was a regular bully. While he chose his targets carefully limiting them to people he knew he could handle he wasn't very tactful when it came to the delivery of his assertiveness and often got himself into trouble.
He only learned to finesse his style as an aggressor when faced with the ultimatum of expulsion for his bad behavior. After a seemingly endless amount of lectures from the Headmaster, his head of house, his parents, and even his brother Rodolphus learned and began to develop the idea of subtlety. His acts of delinquency became more covert and instead of passing on his menace through his fists he would drag his victims down dark hallways and whisper muttering threats against them inspiring subdued compliance through a promise of something much worse if they told anyone. That isn't to say he publicly became a model student either although his grades drastically improved to help further the facade. Rodolphus was still known for teasing his peers and generally harassing them playfully in public.
During his fifth year, Rodolphus' father introduced him to a group of Pureblood wizards known as the Knights of Walpurgis. While he was too young to participate in their meetings he was allowed to sit in and even if he didn't want to go, his father would drag him along. While he'd been taught growing up that Purebloods were a superior breed of wizard, all of his elitist ideals were perfected and refined with his time spent in the presence of the Knights. Rodolphus viewed the group, made entirely out of men from what he could see, as boring, stale, and completely pointless. All they did was sit around and complain about how things are changing from the way they should be. He hated going to their meetings and being forced to sit there and be quiet and then smile and make ridiculously boring small talk afterwards. In fact, the only thing he took away from the Knights of Walpurgis was an affinity for cigars although he wouldn't start smoking them himself until after graduation, and a closer relationship to his father.
Going into his seventh year at Hogwarts now, Rodolphus will have perfected his all smiles to the public front while being nasty behind closed doors. He will have matured a great deal and begun taking himself and what he is more seriously than ever before for reasons detailed in the Angst and Plot Ideas section later on.
Family: The Lestrange family is a fairly recognized name among the other Pureblood lines but to the public eye they're just "one of those others", milling about other family names like Carrows or Yaxley. It certainly doesn't stand out at all, not like the disgustingly rich Malfoys or the vast and proud Blacks. The other Pureblood families would have a better understanding of the Lestrange family than most others. They would know that unlike the Blacks, whose family tree has branches that extend into nearly every other Pureblood family, the Lestrange's are a far more narrow like a cypress. They have a tendency for marriages that are maybe a little too closely related and a history or producing offspring with diminished magical ability and other physical retardations and complications because of this. Another family trait probably equated to the closeness of their family lines would be poor mental stability. More Lestranges go crazy as they get older than stay sane.
Rodolphus' relationship with his parents isn't too aberrant of the norm despite what a handful he was growing up. Now that he's older, Rodolphus has a healthy respect for his parents and as he has since he was born, he loves them both.
Like most sons, he wants to make his father proud of him and to live up to his expectations and while their relationship wasn't the overly chummy type they did bond together mostly during Rodolphus' sit ins with the Knights of Walpurgis. Rodolphus' father, in turn, isn't disappointed with his sons progress either. He earns good marks in school and now that he's a teenager, acts properly and politely when meeting his father's friends. Rodolphus is growing up to be a very suitable and capable heir to the point that he feels safe leaving the Lestrange family name in his hands
His relationship with his mother is equally uneventful. He loves and honors his mother who never was much of a working woman and spent countless nights reading to her sons religiously. Like he does his father, Rodolphus wants to make his mother proud of him and has decided the best way he can do this is to get married and settle down, have children, and be happy with his life. While Rodolphus' mother has proven weak towards illness, he is always there to help take care of and look after her when she's sick, tired, or lonely.
Rabastan, for Rodolphus, is his sidekick. From spending so much time taking care of his brother growing up, Rodolphus feels the need to teach his little brother everything he knows and to look out for him to the best of his ability. It isn't uncommon for the two of them to be seen together and Rodolphus will always make time for Rabastan should his little brother seek him out. It makes Rodolphus a little sad now that his little brother is old enough to take care of himself but he understands Rabastan making a name for himself by himself is something that he has to do. (For characters outside the House of Black) What is your character's relation to the Blacks? Rodolphus, as a "proper" Pureblood wizard has known the other Pureblood families, including the Blacks, for all of his life. He goes to school with their children and has already begun entertaining the notion that he should marry one of them in order to help propel his own family name into recognition and importance. Since he views the Black family as Pureblood royalty (as the saying goes), marrying into their family line could possibly be one of the best things that have ever happened to the Lestranges. Angsts: There is a tradition among the Lestrange family that once the heir to the family becomes old enough to take over the family (usually around seventeen years of age or post school graduation), they kill their predecessor and take control. While Rodolphus isn't exactly queasy over the idea it will definitely be a major angst for him once the deed is committed -- not only because his father is now dead but because he's in charge of the family name. Rodolphus also has a bit of a violent streak. The scars on his hands from bites and scratches are from his many fights with animals and now, as he gets older, other people. He's been pondering the idea of committing a truly dastardly crime such as murder, rape, or a combination there of for quite some time now. Being a man curious about dark magic and all things surrounding and relating to death if he ever commits to some of the terrible thoughts in his head it's certain to make news in the Prophet. Rodolphus is afraid (trembling, ghostly white, I just might pee myself afraid) of the following things: Werewolves, Dementors, and the thought of being sent to Azkaban Fortress. Rodolphus is prone to violent sexual encounters. Blood play, wrestling, brawling, and especially strangulation are some of his more interesting kinks.
Plot Ideas: According to the traditions of his family, Very soon (probably during the summer before he begins his seventh year) Rodolphus is going to murder his own father. Of course, eventually he's going to have to get around to courting and marrying Bellatrix Black too. Since Rodolphus is going to be trying to worm his way into the Black family in order to marry Bellatrix it may be cool if he could have been sucking up to her parents for a while now in order to get into their good graces, maybe even have made a "mentor" out of someone related closely or somewhat closely to Bellatrix so he has an excuse to go over to her house all the time. Maybe their father? It would be neat if a way could be worked out so that Rodolphus can pester them at great length. Shipping Preferences: I'm up and open for absolutely anything, Rodolphus and any Black, not necessarily Bellatrix alone. Sometimes, my Rodolphus is prone to crushes on Narcissa and more often than not, he rather enjoys the idea of shipping Bellatrix and Narcissa (not both of them with him but the sisters, you know, doing things to each other). PB: Michael Gandolfi although I'm willing to find someone else if you'd like. Any other information about your character? Not that I can really think of at this time. This application took a lot out of me :D
